Researchers have drawn a strong link between poor dental health and risk for heart attack and stroke. There are several reasons this may be. One theory is that oral bacteria enter the blood stream, attach to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries and contribute to clot formation. The clots then obstruct blood flow and lead to heart attacks. It is also possible that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, contributing to swelling of the arteries.
